Abstract

영문초록: p. 223-229|라이크라(Lycra) 출현이후 눈부신 발전을 거듭해 온 스트레치(stretch) 신소재는 제2의 피부(second skin)의 개념과 함께 편안하고 자유스러운 스포츠 룩으로서 또는 에로틱한 란제리 스타일로서 현대패션의 진취적인 미 표현에 근본적인 역할을 감당해 왔다. 특히, 1990년대 패션은 21세기를 앞두고 새 밀레니엄 시대에 대한 기대와 전망과 함께 사회적, 문화적 미적 가치는 물론 기술적 진보의 가치까지도 포괄적으로 표현하면서 나타났는데 그중 가장 두드러지게 나타난 것이 바로 스트레?? 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩(Body-conscious look)의 유행이다. 바디컨셔스 룩은 신체 밀착의 매력과 함께 현대 패션디자이너들에게 즘 더 진보적이고 혁신적인 디자인을 하도록 새로운 영감을 불어 넣어왔고, 특히 1990년대 동안에는 현대 패션디자인에 새로운 미적 개념을 더하면서 사용범주와 미적 표현의 다양성이 크게 증가되고 확산되어져 왔다. 본 연구의 목적은 1990년대를 풍미했던 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩의 미적 특성들을 분석, 고찰함으로서 바디컨셔스 룩의 근원이 되고 있는 스트레치 소재의 미적 특징과 가치를 재인식 하고 새로운 세기를 앞둔 대중들의 미적 욕구와 미 가치의 방향을 파악하는데 있다. 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩의 유행은 지금 현재에도 계속되고 있음을 감안할 때, 본 연구는 20세기말 패션의 미를 정리하고 21세기의 패션디자인과 미(美)에 대한 전망도 함께 기대해 볼 수 있다는 점에서 의의 있는 연구가 되리라 생각된다. 연구범위는 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩이 급속도로 유행하면서 확산, 발전하였던 1990년대의 스타일을 분석하는 것에 집중하고, 유명 디자이너들의 바디컨셔스 룩에 대한 의식과 작품 분석에 초점을 맞?少?. 연구방법은 문헌, 사진 조사와 패션 관련 전문회사들의 방문, 패션쇼 등을 통한 자료 수집으로 진행되었다. 연구의 내용은 먼저, 1990년대의 전반적인 패션 경향과 유행의 사회 문화적 배경을 살펴본다. 현대패션에서 바디컨셔스 룩의 형성과 진보는 스트레치 신소재의 발달과 이용의 확산에서 비롯된 것을 전제로 하고 있기 때문에 이론적 고찰로서, 스트레치 신소재의 발달과정과 함께 스판덱스, 라이크라를 비롯한 현재 바디컨셔스 룩에 많이 사용되어지는 스트레치 소재에 대해 알아본다. 또한, 바디컨셔스 룩이 스포츠웨어와 속옷류로부터 파생되어 일상복의 패션 아이템으로서 유행하기까지의 배경을 살펴본다. 그리고, 바디컨셔스 룩에 대한 확실한 예술관을 가지고서 꾸준히 스타일을 발표 해오고 있는 유명 디자이너들의 디자인들을 미국, 프랑스, 이태리 등으로 분류하여 살펴보면서 그들의 작품철학에서 드러난 미적 특징에 대해서 중점적으로 분석한다. 본론에서는 작품 분석을 통해 표출된 현대적 미 특성과 이미지의 개념들을 관련 저술들을 통해 좀 더 구체적으로 파악하는데 주안점을 두는데 미적 특성들간의 관계 파악을 쉽게 하기 위해 미 양식으로 분류하여 고찰, 정리한다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩에 나타난 미적 특성들을 분석, 고찰한 결과 크게, 기능주의(functionalism), 미니멀리즘(minimailsm), 에로티시즘(eroticism), 미래주의(futurism)의 미 양식의 특성을 띄며 나타났다. 1. 기능주의적 미는 유연한 신축적 특징으로 인해 자유롭고 편안한 활동복으로 입혀지는 데서 그 가치를 찾을 수 있다. 즉, '편안한', '자유스러운' 등의 패션이미지와 함께 현대사회에서 요구되고 있는 다목적 기능(flexibility)을 충족시켜준다. 또 다른 기능적 미적 특성은 획일화(uniformity) 현상으로 나타났다. 획일화는 일할 때 입는 옷이라는 의미로서 기능수행의 의복 의미를 내포하며, 동시에 스트레치 소재 자체의 신축성으로 인해 외적으로 간결하고 획일화된 스타일로서의 동일복화 현상을 의미한다. 2. 미니멀리즘 미적 특징은 스트레치 소재의 신축성으로 인해 신체라인을 그대로 드러낸 단순성(simplicity)으로 나타났다. 또한, '최소(less)'로서 '최대(more)' 효과를 내는 최소주의의 현상으로 나타났는데 즉, 소재 자체의 신축성으로 인해 다트, 솔기선, 여밈 등 옷의 구성선이 축소, 또는 절제되므로써 ?各? 형태와 사이즈가 점점 더 좁아지고, 작아지고 이에 따라 공정과정과 가격단가 역시 감소되는 결과를 가져왔다. 한편, 피부밀착의 최소 아이템인 속옷류가 바디컨셔스 룩의 아이템으로 나타나므로서 양적인 면에서의 최소화가 나타났고, 더욱 가벼워지고 더욱 얇아진 소재로부터 신체노출이 더욱 강조되어지면서 질적인 면에서도 최소화가 나타났다. 3. 에로티시즘 미적 특징은 밀착된 옷을 통해 드러난 건강한(healthy) 섹시(sexy) 미 추구에서 볼 수 있다. 즉, 스트레치에 의해 몸에 밀착되어지는 스타일은 신체를 보다 볼륨있고 섹시하게 보이는 것을 선호하는 경향으로 흐르도록 하였다. 또한, 더욱 얇아지고 가벼워진 스트레치 소재로부터 오는 투명성(transparency)과 누드(nude) 효과, 그리고 얇은 소재들끼리 겹쳐 입는 레이어링(layering) 효과로부터 에로틱한 미가 잘 드러나고 있다. 그리고, 신체 강조가 지나치게 강조되어 표현되어졌을 때는 관능적인 페티시(fetish)양상을 띄는 것으로 드러났으며, 피부위에 텍스쳐를 주는 듯한 타투 효과 역시 에로틱의 극단적인 표현으로서 나타났다. 남성복에서도 역시 남성의 신체라인을 드러내거나 비치는 소재를 통한 노출 현상으로 나타났는데, 결과적으로 유니섹스와 앤드로지너스 스타일 유행의 큰 요인으로 작용하였고 특히 남성의 여성화가 두드러지게 나타났다. 4. 미래주의 미적 특징은 기능주의, 미니멀리즘, 에로티시즘의 미적 특성들이 복합적으로 상징적인 의미를 띄면서 나타났다. 즉, 바디컨셔스 룩의 미래주의 미는 스트레치 소재의 신체 밀착성과 유연성으로부터 오는 편안함과 자유스러움 추구의 기능적 성향이 미래에도 중요한 컨셉으로서 더욱 강조되어지리라는 것을 전제로 하고 있다. 따라서, 계절과 나이의 구분 없이, 또 일할 때와 여가 또는 파티를 즐길 때 누구나 어디서나 편하게 입을 수 있는 다목적 기능의 동일옷(multifunctional uniform)은 바로 미래의 대중적인 패션의 의미를 함축하고 있다. 또한, 신체 밀착으로부터 단순하게 드러난 신체 실루엣은 바로 미니멀한 라인의 최종점이자 곧, 미래패션의 이미지이다. 미래에는 더욱 최소화된 라인으로 되어 결국 구성상 가장 미니멀한 몰딩옷(moulding garment)으로 귀착될 것으로 보는 견해가 많다. 광택, 메탈릭, 투명 스트레치 소재의 하이테크(high-technology)이미지에서도 역시 미래주의 미적 특성이 나타났다. 즉, 광택, 메탈릭 소재는 미끈한 바디 슬릭(sleek) 효과로서 무(無)의 이미지와 함께 미래에 대한 무한한 가능성의 의미를 시사하고, 얇고 가벼워서 투명하게 보이는 스트레치 소재는 신체를 투사되어 보이게 하는 누드 이미지 효과와 함께 시공간을 초월한 미래세계로의 동경과 우주의 투명함을 시사한다. 결국, 바디컨셔스 룩은 간결하고 획일적인 특성 때문에 전 세계적으로 같은 스타일이 입혀지는 보편화 현상(universality)을 가져왔고 이와 같은 의복의 보편적 동질성은 미래적인 이미지를 암시한다. 그리고, 이것은 아메리칸 캐쥬얼 스포츠 룩이 세계적으로 보편적인 패션 스타일로서 뿌리내리고 있음을 시사하며, 동시에 미래세대와 미래환경에 대해서도 보편적인 스타일이 될 것으로 드러났다. 이상으로 볼 때, 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩에서 보여진 미적 특성 개념들은 하나의 분리된 미적 양식 개념들이 아니고 내포되어 있는 이미지들이 서로 중복되어 연결되어진 복합적인 미 양식 개념들로 나타났다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 바디컨셔스 룩에 나타난 전반적인 미적 특성들은 스트레치 소재가 지닌 미의 특성들과 직결되어 나타났다. 즉, 바디컨셔스 룩의 현대미의 위상은 바디컨셔스 룩의 근본적인 요소인 스트레?? 소재 미의 성공적인 연출이라고 할 수 있다. 셋째, 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩에서 보여진 복합적 미의 특성들은 현대인의 미의식과 가치관이 잘 반영되어진 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 현상은 1990년대의 젊고 건강한 몸매 가꾸기에 대한 대중들의 인식과 반응이 과거의 소극적 개념에서 벗어나 신체강조와 노출이라는 적극적이고 자연스러운 개념으로 변하면서 바디컨셔스 룩 유행을 통해 일반적인 미적 특징으로 드러난 것이다. 미래는 현재의 글로벌화 현상이 더욱 가속화됨에 따라 세계는 균일화된 사회가 될 것이며 또한 기후 환경변화를 정면적으로 겪게되면서 사회 전반적으로 환경 친화적 기능성과 편안함이 생활의 핵심 컨셉으로 강조되어질 것으로 보여진다. 그리고, 신체 자체가 착용하고 있는 옷만큼이나 중시되어질 것이기 때문에 미래의 기능적 실용성은 우리의 건강한 육체로부터 오는 신체미와 직결되어 나타날 것으로 예측되어진다. 따라서, 미래패션 역시 새로운 환경에 잘 적응할 수 있는 첨단 텍스타일에 의존하면서 감성적, 정신적인 욕구를 잘 충족시켜주는 더욱 편안하고 기능적이 될 것이라고 전망되어지고 있다. 그리고 가장 성공적인 디자인은 인체를 터치?? 스타일이 될 것이라고 예측되고 있는 견지에서 볼 때, 스트레치 소재에 의한 바디컨셔스 룩은 건강한 신체미 표출과 더불어 기능성과 아름다움을 겸비한 우리의 자유 옷(freedom clothing)이자, 곧 21세기의 새로운 라이프 스타일과도 잘 어울어지는 미래의복(the clothing of the future)을 상징하는 것이라고 할 수 있다.|The new stretch materials that have been widely developed since the original appearance of Lycra continue to play a basic role in a comfortable and liberal sporty look as well as an erotic lingerie style with the concept of a second skin. In the 1990's, particularly, fashion showed the value of technological progress as well as social and aesthetic value with expectations toward the new millennium, and it's body-conscious look by the use of stretch materials that were cost effective and appeared throughout the field of fashion design. The body-conscious look has inspired fashion designers to explore more progressive and innovative design and the scope and use of these new materials and presenting effects have also been expanded and diversified. The purpose of this study is to recognize the aesthetic characteristics and value of stretch fabrics that is the basis of body-conscious look, and to grasp the direction of aesthetic desires and value of people who look to the new millennium ahead. This is done by analyzing and examining aesthetic characteristics of the body-conscious look by stretching fabrics over the human form. Considering that the body-conscious look using stretch fabrics has continued until now, it is a meaningful study that summarizes much of the modern beauty of 20th century fashion and makes us contemplate the concept of beauty in 21st century fashion. The scope of this study is focused on analysing the style of the 1990's when body-conscious look using stretch materials was expanded and developed. It also concentrates on famous fashion designers' consciousness and analysis of work. The method of this study includes data collection through visiting fashion-related companies and fashion shows as well as literature and photo investigation. In regard to content, this study first examines the overall trend of the 1990's and the social and cultural background of fashion and vogue in the 1990's. The formation and progress of the body-conscious look in modern fashion is based on the development of new stretch material and the expansion of it's use, so this study examines stretch material mainly used for a body-conscious look such as spandex and Lycra as well as the developing processes of new stretch materials. It also looks at the background of how the body-conscious look developed from sports wear and lingerie thus becoming popular as daily fashion items. This study also analyzes aesthetic characteristics and techniques of famous fashion designers who have continuously showed work of the body-conscious look with their using philosophies by dividing them into American, French and Italian designers. The body of this study is focused on grasping the principal features of modem beauty and the meaning of this image concepts through related literature categorizing them into aesthetic styles to facilitate the grasp of relationships between aesthetic features. The result of this study is summarized as follows: First, as a result of analysing and examining the aesthetic features of the body-conscious look, they show functionalism, minimalism, eroticism and futurism. 1. Functional beauty has value through the development of free and comfortable clothing. That is, it fulfills the flexibility(multi-purpose) of fashion required in the modem society with image of 'comfort' and 'freedom'. Another functional feature appeared as uniformity. Uniformity means work wear connoting functional wear, it also means uniformed wear as a simplified and unified style because of the flexibility of material itself. 2. Minimal characteristics of the body-conscious look are found in a simplicity that reveals the body line with stretching material. It also appears as minimalism, which has the effect of 'more' with 'less'. That is, flexibility of the material makes the form and the size of clothing narrowed and the details including darts and seam-allowance reduced, and the processing and prices become also reduced. On the other hand, lingerie, which is the minimal item that closely adheres to the body, has brought minimization in quantity, and the aspect of quality has also become minimized with lighter and thinner material that makes the body exposure stressed. 3. Erotic characteristics of a body-conscious look by using stretch materials appear mainly as a new image of modem fashion such as 'healthy', and 'sexy' by the influence of daily sports and the emphasis on healthy beauty. That is, the body-conscious style makes the trend of preference to the sexy body with a volume. Erotic characteristics of it also appear from transparency and nudity effected by lighter and thinner stretch materials as well as a layering effect. This beauty of transparency symbolizes modem feminity as well as visual freshness. Eroticism of the body-conscious look shows fetish-like aspects when expressed with an exaggerated body and a tattoo effect is also another extreme effect of eroticism revealing the body with stretch materials. This effect extends into men's clothing, exposing body lines as well as exposure of the body through transparent material. It has become minimized with less construction line by the better qualities of stretch fabric, which is the image of future fashion. This minimization of clothing will continue in the future. It will, after all, reach moulding garments that are the most minimal in its structure. Another futuristic beauty of the body-conscious look is the futuristic image of high-technology stretch materials having glossy, metallic and transparent qualities. Glossy and metallic materials are often used in soft stretch materials, which suggest the image of infinite possibility of the future with its body sleek effect. And, the transparent stretch materials symbolize the desires for future world and the transparency of the universe transcending the time and space with the nude image effect of the body. After all, the body-conscious look, by using stretch materials, has become the aspect of uniformity and universality because of its simple and uniform characteristics. This universalized uniformity suggests futuristic image. It has been a common style for both men and women all over the world, which means that a casual look, so-called American style, becomes universalized. It will also be an universal fashion style for future generations and environment with universal characteristics and functionality of the beauties of future. Referring to the previously mentioned features, the aesthetic characteristics of a body-conscious look are not separated aesthetic concepts and they are rather complex aesthetic concept of beauty with overlapped and linked images. Secondly, overall characteristics shown in a body-conscious look are directly related to aesthetic characteristics of stretch materials, and the status of body-conscious look is the successful completion of advanced technology in textiles, which is the basis of a body-conscious look. Thirdly, the complex aesthetic features of the body-conscious look by stretch material reflects well modern people's aesthetic concept of beauty and value. It means recognition of and response to body shaping and health of people of the 1990's changing from a passive concept into natural and positive concept, and it appears as the general features of beauty through the body-conscious look in the 1990's. As globalization is accelerated, the world will become a more standardized society. It also seems that it will emphasize environmentally friendly functionalism and comfort with predictions of suffering changes of climates and environments. The body itself will be highly considered as much as its clothing, This study shows that the functional practicality of the future will be directly related to beauty of the body. Accordingly, fashion of the future will seem to be more comfortable and functionally dependent on cutting-edge textiles. In the sense that the most successful design touches the body, the body-conscious look by stretch material will also become our freedom clothing equipped with both functionality and beauty to symbolize the clothing of the future.
