The traditional dragon pattern is an valuable asset of Chinese culture. Along with the growing trend of "Chinese style" clothing fashion in the world, it is favored by renowned fashion designers all over the world, thus it is of great significance to study Chinese traditional pattern in costume design. The purpose of this paper is to analyze his form, significance and application through the study of traditional Chinese dragon patterns.Because many people abroad do not understand the dragon pattern.I only stayed in the understanding of the shape, but did not study the far-reaching significance of it.Therefore, through the research in this paper, more people will come to know this representative traditional pattern.From the perspective of clothing, this paper studies the historical evolution and modeling characteristics, aesthetic analysis and cultural connotation, and the application of dragon pattern in modern costume design. Literature search is mainly adopted to collect data related to this project from a wide variety of Literature, papers and journals. The evolution of dragon patterns in each period of history is concluded through classification and text reference, and the modeling characteristics of dragon patterns in each period are analyzed. Its evolution and development have gone through a long period of different histories, and each historical stage embodies different modeling characteristics. Amid the change of the form of dragon, herein always accompanied by the changes of the Chinese nation's aesthetic. This paper next does Further aesthetic analysis of dragon’s shape, and explores the cultural connotation behind it, pointing out that the dragon pattern corresponds to the symbols of imperial power, national characteristics and auspicious meaning respectively in its modeling evolution period. which also laid the overall tone of modern dragon patterns and provided rich material and cultural background for modern design. Based on the definition and characteristics of modern clothing design, the last chapter of this paper analyzes the application value, application status and application prospect of dragon pattern in modern clothing design. Summarize the application principles of dragon pattern in modern clothing design, and carry out case design practice under this guidance. From the four aspects of the representation and abstraction of the dragon pattern, the partial application and the meaning extension, it is applied to modern clothing.
