돌봄에서 해방? 돌봄과 연대로의 해방! - 도리스 레싱(Doris Lessing)의 「19호실로 가다」(“To Room Nineteen”)와 단편들 -

Abstract

자본주의 체제에서 재생산노동과 돌봄노동은 억압과 전유, 착취의 대상이 된다. 자본주의의 신자유주의 심화는 이 구조적 불평등 문제를 손질하기는커녕 더욱 심화시킨다. 이 글은 억압과 착취의 대상이 되는 돌봄노동을 ‘자본주의적-돌봄노동’으로, 이에 대비되는 보편적 돌봄을 ‘비(非)자본주의적-돌봄’으로 명명한다. 전자에 관해서는 이반일리히(Ivan Illich)의 ‘그림자 노동’ 논의를 통해 이것이 어떻게 ‘인간 생활의 자립과 자존을 위한 활동’과 대비되는지 고찰한다. 그리고 자본주의적-돌봄노동의 신자유주의적 심화 현상과 관련해서는 윤재원의 ‘돌봄위기의 경험구조’ 논의를 참조하여 고찰한다. 상기 이론적 논의는 「19호실로 가다」(“To Room Nineteen”)를 비롯한 도리스 레싱(Doris Lessing)의 단편들을 함께 읽음으로써 문학과의 교차적 상상력과 논의의 풍성함을 도모한다. 신자유주의 2기로의 이행기에 쓰인 레싱의 1950~60년대 작품들은 ‘자본주의적-돌봄노동’의 억압적 성질을 극적으로 재현하는 한편, 자립과 자존의 활동으로 나아가기 위한 대안―다시 돌봄, 그리고 연대―을 제시하며, ‘비(非)자본주의적-돌봄’ 실천을 상상해야 할 오늘날 과제에 대한 일말의 해답을 제시한다.

In the capitalist system, reproductive labor and care work are subjected to oppression, appropriation, and exploitation, and neoliberalization exacerbates these structural inequalities rather than addressing them. This article identifies care labor within capitalism as “capitalist-care labor” and contrasts it with “non-capitalist-care” that represents universal care practices. The former is explored through Ivan Illich's concept of “shadow work,” highlighting its opposition to “subsistence.” The neoliberal intensification of capitalist-care labor is then analyzed with reference to Jaewon Yoon's discussion on the “structure of experience of the care crisis.” These theoretical discussions are accompanied by readings of Doris Lessing's short stories, including “To Room Nineteen,” which enrich cross-disciplinary imagination and discussions. Written during the transitional period to neoliberalism, Lessing's works from the 1950s~60s vividly depict the oppressive nature of capitalist-care labor while proposing universal care and solidarity as alternatives, offering a hint toward addressing the contemporary challenge of the care crisis and pursuing the practice of non-capitalist care.
