고전소설 디지털 아카이브의 구현 전략과 활용 가치

Abstract

디지털 매체로의 전환은 지식 생태계의 근본적 변화를 요구해 왔다. 지식의 접근성을 획기적으로 확장하고 기존의 사고와 패러다임을 빠르게 전환하고 있는 상황에서, 고전문학계 역시 전산 도구를 활용한 새로운 비평을 시도하고 있다. 이런 점에서 기존의 지식 구축 방식을 개편하고, 롱 데이터와 빅 데이터를 효과적으로 다룰 수 있는 새로운 환경을 마련하는 것이 요구된다. 본고는 이 같은 문제의식을 바탕으로, 현재 고전소설 디지털 아카이브가 지닌 한계점을 크게 두 가지로 지적하였다. 첫째, 이미지 중심 원문 제공에 치중되어 전산 도구를 활용한 연구방법론(텍스트 마이닝, 네트워크 분석 등)을 적용하기 어렵다는 점, 둘째, 현대어 표기와 주석 등 보조 자료의 부족으로 인해 이용자의 작품 이해도가 제한된다는 점이다. 이를 개선하기 위해 플레인 텍스트 기반 자료 구축, 개방형 아카이브체계 마련, 지식 공유형 플랫폼 조성을 제안하였다. 이러한 개선안의 구현을 위해, 디지털화의 우선 대상을 활자본 고전소설로 선정하였다. 반면 필사본과 방각본은 이본 검토와 저작권 문제 등의 현실적 제약을 감안해후순위로 배정하였다. 이와 같은 디지털 아카이브가 구축된다면, 고전소설이 더 이상소수 전문가만의 연구 대상을 넘어 타 학문 분야, 교육 현장, 그리고 창작 분야까지 다양하게 활용될 수 있음을 밝혔다.

The transition to digital media has demanded a fundamental transformation of the knowledge ecosystem, drastically enhancing accessibility to information and rapidly reshaping established paradigms. In response, the field of classical Korean literature has increasingly turned to computational tools and data-driven research methods, driven by the need to handle long data and big data. This shift has prompted a reevaluation of traditional approaches to knowledge construction. Focusing on these issues, this study examines the current challenges in digital archives of classical Korean novels, where image-centric browsing often hampers text-based analysis, and the lack of annotations or supplementary materials limits deeper understanding. To address these problems, we propose (1) building plain-text resources conducive to quantitative analysis, (2) establishing an open-access archive system to broaden accessibility, and (3) creating a platform that promotes knowledge accumulation and sharing. By designating Print-edited classic novels (活字本) as the primary target for digitization, and placing Commercial woodblock-printed classic novels (坊刻本) and Manuscript classic novels (筆寫本) in secondary consideration due to variant texts (異本) and copyright constraints, this study underscores the importance of systematic prioritization in archival projects. Above all, it highlights the urgent need to upgrade analog-based archives to digital environments and provide an infrastructure that enables the effective use of computational and data-driven research methodologies, ensuring that classical Korean novels are no longer restricted to specialists alone but can also be utilized in diverse academic fields, educational contexts, and creative industries within a rapidly evolving knowledge ecosystem.
