모리스 르블랑의 『이것이 날개다 Voici des ailes』(1898): 자전거 예찬과 그 의미

Abstract

본 연구는 모리스 르블랑이 현대적 자전거를 소재로 쓴 『이것이 날개다 Voici des ailes』(1898)에 담긴 자전거 예찬의 내용들을 확인, 이 책이 현대적인 자전거인 ‘여왕 자전거(La Reine Bicyclette)’에 바쳐지는 ‘자전거를 위한 찬가’로서의 가능성을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 무엇보다 먼저 이 작품의 목차를 통해 작가가 현대적 자전거를 예찬하는 소설의 구조를 확인하고, 자전거 예찬을 위해 작가가 사용하고 있는 어휘들의 비유적 의미를 살펴볼 것이다. 다음으로는 작가가 이 소설의 인물들의 입을 통해 전하는 자전거의 현대적 아름다움으로는 어떤 것들이 있는지 살펴본다. 이는 본격적으로 시작된 자전거의 시대, 작가가 현대적 자전거의 어떤 점을 예찬을 하고 있는지 살펴보는 기회가 될 것이다. 이를 통해 잘 알려지지 않은 모리스 르블랑의 이 책이 자전거에 경의를 표하는 소설임을 확인할 것이다.

Maurice Leblanc(1864-1941) is a French novelist and writer of short stories, known primarily as the creator of the fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. This study aimes to examine Maurice Leblanc's Voici des ailes(1898) as a ‘hymn to the bicycle’ dedicated to the modern bicycle, called ‘the Queen's bicycle(La Reine Bicyclette)’, by considering the contents of the aesthetics of the bicycle in this short story. To this end, we will first check the structure of the novel through the table of contents of this work, in which the author praises modern bicycles. We will also examine the metaphorical meaning of the vocabulary that the author uses to explain the value of bicycle. Next, we think over what beauties of the modern bicycle the author is talking about through the mouths of the characters in this nouvelle. This will be an opportunity to see what aspects of modern bicycle the author praises, at the end of the 19th century when the true era of the bicycle began. Through this study, we’ll be able to confirm that Voici des ailes by Maurice Leblanc is a novel that pays homage to bicycle.
