『매일신보』에 연재된 춘향가, <옥중화> : 새로운 주해의 필요성과 근거에 대한 보고

Abstract

본 논문은 1912년 『매일신보』에 연재된 이해조 산정 <옥중화>를 대상으로 한, 주해의 필요성에 관한 제안이며 주해 과정에서 파악된 <옥중화>의 어휘 사용과 표기에 관한 보고이다. 『매일신보』의 <옥중화>는 근대전환기 혹은 애국계몽기 시대를 여는 단초가 되는 작품이면서도 그 뿌리가 고전소설에 있다는 점에서 고전문학은 물론 현대문학 연구 영역에서도 관심을 가질 만한 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현재 『매일신보』에 연재된 <옥중화>는 독서물로서도 문학 연구 대상으로서도 소외되어 있는 실정이다. 『매일신보』 소재 <옥중화>의 서지 검토가 상대적으로 미흡한 원인 중 하나가 텍스트의 접근 장벽이 높다는 것인데, 특히 압도적인 한문 표기에서 오는 부담을 줄이기 위해서라도 교주가 필요하다고 판단하였다. 이에 한문에 익숙지 않은 독자와 초학자를 위해 음과 뜻을 주석으로 달아 ‘읽고 이해하기 쉬운’ 텍스트로 재구성하는 데 목표를 두고 교주와 주해 작업이 시작되었다. 본 논문은 『매일신보』 소재 <옥중화>의 주해 과정에서 파악된 어휘와 표기의 특성을 제시하여 선행된 주해 연구의 오류를 바로잡고 주해의 필요성과 근거를 마련하는 데에 목적이 있다. 엄밀한 텍스트 검토 결과 『매일신보』 소재 이해조의 <옥중화>는 판소리체의 운율과 문체를 유지하면서도 이해조의 한문학적 소양을 바탕으로 한 전고의 활용이 풍부하게 반영되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 다만 한문 표기에서는 원문과 상이하거나 오류로 판단되는 경우가 빈번하여 이에 대한 주석이 필수적일 뿐만 아니라 이해조의 자의적 어휘 선택으로 전고의 출처가 불분명한 경우도 있어 『매일신보』 <옥중화>의 주해 작업은 지속적으로 수정되고 보완되어야 함을 알 수 있었다.

This paper is a suggestion on the necessity of a new study on the calculation of Lee Hae-jo, which was serialized in the Maeilshinbo, and a report on the use and notation of the vocabulary of "OkJoonghwa", which is based on the Maeilshinbo, which was identified during the study process. Maeilshinbo's "OkJoonghwa" is a work that opens the modern transition period or the patriotic enlightenment era, but it can be said to be of interest in the field of research on modern literature as well as classical literature, given that its roots are in classical novels. Nevertheless, at this point in time, "OkJoonghwa", which has been serialized in the Maeilshinbo, is alienated both as a reading and a literary research subject. The study on the calculation of the understanding of the Maeilshinbo was considered necessary to reduce the burden of overwhelming Chinese writing, so the study of "OkJoonghwa" was started with the goal of reorganizing it into a text that is "easy to read and understand" with notes and meanings for readers and researchers who are not familiar with Chinese characters in annotations. This paper can be said to be an article that provides the necessity and basis for such a study. This study proposes the necessity for a new annotation of Lee Haijo's "Okjoonghwa," serialized in the Maeilshinbo in 1912, focusing on the vocabulary usage and spelling observed during the working process of annotation. "Okjoonghwa" in the Maeilshinbo serves as a seminal work marking the transitional period to modernity or the Patriotism and Enlightenment period, rooted in classical literature, making it a work of interest not only in classical literature but also in modern literature research. However, despite its significance, the "Okjoonghwa" in the Maeilshinbo has been neglected both as a reading material and a subject of literary research. The relatively limited reviews on "Okjoonghwa" in the Maeilshinbo have highlighted the challenges of accessibility to the text. The extensive use of classical Chinese characters has been burdonsome. The annotations are deemed necessary to reduce this burden by providing corresponding sounds and meanings for these characters. This annotation process aims to reconstruct the text into a “readable and comprehensible” text for readers unfamiliar with the characters and novice scholars. Conclusively, this study aims to present the characteristics of the vocabulary usages and spelling identified during the annotation process of "Okjoonghwa" in the Maeilshinbo, It seeks to correct errors in previous annotation study and establish the establishing the necessity and justification for new annotations.
