생성형 AI 시대 인문학 선언: 포스트휴먼 조건에서 인문학 구하기

헨리 A. 키신저 등이 공동 집필한 『AI이후의 세계』에서 챗GPT는 인쇄술 발명 이래 흔들린 적 없는 인간의 인지 과정을 바꾸는 지적 혁명을 일으키는 신기술이라고 했다. 근대는 “인간은 책을 만들고, 책은 인간을 만든다.”로 성립한 문명이다. 책의 저자는 인간이고, 책은 저자의 원고를 대량 복사한 상품으로 존재한다. 인쇄기는 인간이 쓴 원고를 책으로 대량 복사하는 기계다. 반면 챗GPT는 인간이 생산한 여러 지식을 ‘훔쳐서’ 문장을 생성한다. 스티브 잡스가 즐겨 인용한 피카소가 했다는 명언이 “좋은 예술가는 복사하고, 위대한 예술가는 훔친다.”이다. 그러면 인쇄술이 좋은 예술가였다면, 생성형 AI는 훌륭한 예술가의 수준으로 진화할 것인가? 생성형 AI는 인간 집단기억과 집단학습으로 이뤄지는 문화적 진화의 ‘기본 값(default value)’을 리셋(reset) 하는 파괴력을 가진다. 앞으로 문명의 주역은 더는 인간이 아니라 “인간과 기계의 협응”을 어떻게 하느냐로 운명이 바뀌는 포스트휴먼 시대가 도래할 전망이다. 그렇다면 포스트휴먼 시대 인간이란 무엇인가? “하나의 유령이 전 세계를 휩쓸고 있다. 챗GPT라는 유령이!” 이 유령에 맞서 “포스트 휴먼 인문학(post-human Humanities)”에 대해 생각해 보아야 할 때다.

Kissinger and others, ChatGPT is described as a ground-breaking technology that revolutionizes the cognitive process of humans, which hasn't been shaken since the invention of the printing press. Modern civilization has been built on the premise that "man creates books, and books create man." The author of a book is a human, and the book exists as a mass-copied product of the author's manuscript. The printing press is a machine that mass copies the human-written manuscript into a book. In contrast, ChatGPT generates sentences by 'stealing' various knowledge produced by humans. Picasso, frequently quoted by Steve Jobs, once said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal." If printing is considered a good artist, will generative AI evolve to the level of a great artist? Generative AI holds the destructive power to reset the 'default value' of cultural evolution, constituted by human collective memory and collective learning. The future of civilization is projected to enter a post-human era, where the leading role is no longer held by humans, but by how "collaboration between humans and machines" is achieved. Then, what does it mean to be human in the post-human era? "A spectre is haunting the world ― the spectre of ChatGPT!" It is time to confront this ghost and contemplate the "post-human Humanities."
