빅토르 마그리트의 『갸르손느(La garçonne)』(1922)와 ‘갸르손느(garçonne)’의 의미에 대한 소고

Abstract

작가 빅토르 마그리트와 그의 작품 『갸르손느』(1922)는 우리에게 잘 알려지지 않은 작가와 작품이다. 하지만 이 소설은 ‘갸르손느’라는 어휘를 대중화시킨 것은 물론 1920년대 초 프랑스에 등장한 신여성 ‘갸르손느’의 모습을 생생히 보여주는 사회·문화적 가치를 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 빅토르 마그리트와 그의 소설 『갸르손느』(1922)를 소개하고 ‘갸르손느’의 의미와 이 소설의 가치를 재고해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 무엇보다 먼저 우리는 1922년 단행본 출간 시 베스트셀러였던 『갸르손느』가 문제작이 되어 끊임없이 스캔들에 시달리게 된 상황을 살펴본다. 이 과정에서 우리는 사회소설 작가로서의 작가의 경향과 『갸르손느』가 문제작이 된 그 이유를 고찰할 것이다. 다음으로는 소설 제목으로 사용되기도 한 ‘갸르손느’라는 어휘의 의미를 작품의 내용을 통해 숙고한다. 이는 작가가 대중화시키는데 일조한 ‘갸르손느’의 특징과 의미를 확인하는 기회가 될 것이다. 이를 통해 우리는 이 소설의 시대적 의미와 가치 또한 살펴보게 될 것이다.

Victor Margueritte(1866-1942) and his novel Garçonne(1922) are not well known to us. This novle, however, has social and cultural values that not only popularized the word ‘garçonne’ but also vividly showing the aspects of the ‘garçonne’ appeared in France in the early 1920s. This study aimes to introduce Victor Margueritte and his novel Garçonne(1922) and to reconsider the meaning of the vocabulary ‘garçonne’ and Garçonne. To this end, first of all, we examine why this novel, which became a best seller as soon as it was published, is constantly dogged by a wave of abuse scandals. In this process, we would consider the writer's tendencies as a social novelist and the reason why Garçonne became a controversial work. Next, we think over the meaning of the word ‘garçonne’ used as the title of the novel through Garçonne. These analyzes will allow to understand the characteristics of the ‘garçonne’ as well as its meaning. At the same time, we could also see the periodical implications of this novel. This study will be an opportunity to reconsider the value of Garçonne(1922).
