플랫폼 자본주의의 부상과 문제들

Abstract

기업명의 첫 글자를 따서 소위 ‘가파(GAFA)’로 지칭되기도 하는 구글, 애플, 페이스북, 아마존 등 플랫폼 기업들은 시가총액 기준으로 최근 세계 상위 10대기업에 모두 포함되는 등, 플랫폼 기업들의 부상은 현재 자본주의의 특징과 변모를 이해하는 데 가장 핵심적인 현상 중 하나이다. 이러한 플랫폼 기업들의 부상은 대중들의 일상과 문화, 정치, 경제, 노동 등에 걸친 전 사회 영역이 이 기업들과 더욱 긴밀하게 얽혀있음을 나타내는 것이기도 하다. 1990년대 중반 이후 인터넷의 확산과 닷컴버블, 자산가격 케인즈주의를 배경으로 성장한 플랫폼 기업들은 4차 산업혁명으로 일컬어지기도 하는 발달한 데이터/네트워크 기술에 힘입어 수익취득방식에 따라 다양한 유형으로 진화해왔다. 플랫폼 이용자들의 자유노동/정동노동은 플랫폼기업들에게 이용자 데이터를 제공하고, 이의 가공과 판매, 활용은 플랫폼 기업들의 큰 수익의 원천이 된다. 네트워크 효과 역시 플랫폼 기업의 성장에 있어서 핵심원리가 되었다. 하지만 플랫폼 기업은 효율, 혁신, 협력과 공유 등 표방하는 긍정적 기치의 이면에서, 개인 주체성의 알고리즘 종속, 데이터 소외, 프라이버시 침해와 정치적 조작, 독점 및 시장지배로 인한 지대 취득과 플랫폼 이용자들의 자유노동에 대한 무보상, 플랫폼 노동자들에 대한 초유연화로 인한 노동권 침해 및 초과착취 등의 문제를 안고 있기도 하다. 플랫폼 자본주의 추세의 진전에 따른 부작용을 줄이기 위해 이에 대한 사회적 이해의 확대와 대책 마련이 시급하게 요구된다.

The recent rise of platform companies including Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon in the world economy has been a key to understanding of main features and transformations in contemporary capitalism. People’s daily lives and social domains such as culture, politics, economy, and labor all have been influenced and even conditioned by the rise of many kinds of platform companies. Against the backdrop of the spread of the Internet and the dot.com bubble and its burst as well as asset-price Keynsianism around the 1990s and the 2000s, platform tech giants have grown big so far. They also have utilized new data and network technologies invented and recently promoted in the name of the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution,’ and platform companies have so far evolved into several types based on main ways of making profits. Platform-users’ free and affective labor becomes the source of the platform companies’ growth by giving them users’ data which are analyzed and newly processed for profit-making. Using network effects is also a key way of making profits by platform companies. Contrary to its rosy mottos such as the sharing economy and innovation, platform capitalism has problems such as human subjects’ being conditioned to mechanical algorithm, data alienation, privacy attacks, political manipulation, monopolistic rent extraction, non-payment to free labor of platform users, super-exploitation and precariousness of platform laborers and so on. We need more deep and comprehensive understandings of contemporary platform capitalism in order to reduce its problems.
