언간 봉투에 나타난 봉함 용어 ‘근봉’과 ‘봉’의 사용 양상

Abstract

본고는 현전하는 언간 중 봉투가 남아 있는 언간을 대상으로 언간의 봉투에 나타난 봉함 용어 ‘봉(封)’, ‘근봉(謹封)’의 출현 환경과 용법을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한 것이다. 『징보언간독』에서 규식으로 제시하고 있는 것처럼 실제 언간에서도 ‘근봉(謹封)’의 원칙적 용법은 손윗사람에게 존대의 의미로 사용하는 것이었다. 그러나 ‘근봉(謹封)’은 원칙적 용법 이외에 손아랫사람에게 쓰거나 대등한 관계라 할 수 있는 남편과 아내가 서로에게 사용하기도 하였다. 손아랫사람과 부부간에 봉함 용어로 높임의 의미가 있는 ‘근봉(謹封)’을 사용했다는 것은 이들을 대우하고자 하는 화자의 의도가 반영된 것이라 할 수 있겠다. 반면 ‘봉(封)’의 출현 환경은 원칙적 사례를 벗어나는 경우가 없었다. 딸, 아들, 조카와 질부, 여동생 등 손아래 수신자에게만 사용되었다. 한편 봉함 용어로 ‘근봉’을 쓴 편지에서는 청자경어법으로 ‘□□이다’체, ‘□□’체, ‘□□’체, ‘□다’체 등이 쓰였지만, ‘봉’을 편지에서는 ‘□□’체, ‘□다’체로만 나타났다. 이중 ‘근봉’을 쓴 편지에서 ‘□다’체가 함께 나타난 높임의 의미가 일치하지 않는 사례가 있음이 확인되었다.

This paper aimed to identify the circumstances concerning the advent and usages of the sealing terms “bong” (封) and “geunbong” (謹封) in the envelopes of Eongan(Korean vernacular letters) by focusing on the envelopes of existing letters. As established in Jingboeongandok, the actual rule for Eongans was to use the term “geunbong” in letters addressed to one’s elders as an honorific. The term “geunbong,” however, was also used in letters addressed to one’s juniors or equals, such as between husbands and wives. The fact that the honorific “geunbong” (謹封) was also used in letters to one’s juniors or between married couples suggests that the speaker used the term to respect the addressees of the letters. The term “bong” (封), on the other hand, was mostly used by the rules. It was only used when addressing one’s juniors such as one’s daughters, sons, nephews, and nieces or younger sisters. In some cases, the honorific meanings of the sealing term and the addressee of the letter or the honorific for the addressee in the content of the letter did not match. For such cases, in which the honorific meanings did not match, not only the sealing terms but various elements including the expressions for the addressees, the words designating the letters, and the content of the letters should further be considered.
