『트로일러스와 크레시다』에 나타난 사랑의 의미 The meaning of love in Troilus and Cressida

Abstract

초서는 『트로일러스와 크리세이더』에서 트로이 전쟁을 배경으로 트로일러스와 크리세이더의 사랑이야기를 전면에 내세워 전개하는 반면 셰익스피어는 『트로일러스와 크레시다』에서 혐오스러운 전쟁의 정치·경제적인 맥락에서 두 연인의 사랑이야기를 제시하고 있다. 셰익스피어는 이 극에서 전쟁이라는 거칠고 야만스러운 남성의 힘과 경쟁 논리가 지배하는 세계에서 낭만적인 사랑의 가능성을 검토한다. 이 극에서 전쟁은 힘과 자본만이 살아남는 자본주의의 상업화된 사회에 대한 은유로 기능하며, 무의미하고 헛된 명예만을 좇는 개인의 위선과 욕망 속에서 전개되는 트로일러스와 크레시다의 사랑이야기는 그들의 사랑이 환상적인 가치에 불과하다는 것을 보여준다. 낭만적인 연인으로 포장된 트로일러스의 사랑은 단지 성적 욕망에 불과하고, 크레시다의 배신은 전쟁이라는 남성적 세계에서 생존하려는 여성의 처절한 전략에 다름 아니다. 반복되는 자본주의적 상업화의 이미지를 통해 모든 인간관계, 심지어 사랑까지도 상품화되어가는 과정 속에서 이들 사랑의 불모성은 시대적 상황의 반영물이다. 소유주로서의 남성과 소유물로서의 여성을 전경화하여 중개인 없이는 이루어질 수 없는 사랑의 의미를 재검토하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다.

Troilus and Cressida portrays a world where the expectation of true love and chivalry collapses in the late Elizabethan period. Women are regarded as goods in a market of male competition and the language of commerce is used to express the love and war. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the meaning of love presented in Troilus and Cressida focusing on the love story of Troilus and Cressida. While Chaucer develops the love story of Troilus and Criseyde in the background of the Trojan War in Troilus and Criseyde, Shakespeare develops the love story in the political and economic context of the disgusting war in Troilus and Cressida. Shakespeare examines the possibility of romantic love in a world dominated by the rough and barbarous male power of war and the logic of competition. In this world, war functions as a metaphor for the commercialized society of capitalism in which only power and capital survive. So the love of Troilus and Cressida came not from the true emotional exchange but from the individual's hypocrisy and sexual desire. It is merely a fantastic value. The love of Troilus, wrapped in a romantic lover, is in fact only a sexual desire, and the love of Cressida is no different from the desperate strategy of a woman trying to survive in the masculine world of war. Through the image of repeated capitalist commercialization, all human relations and even love are commercialized, and the infertility of these love is a reflection of the situation of the times. Though this play is about the disillusionment of romantic love by cynical view, Shakespeare may have been dreaming of restoring romantic love in the age of materialization and commercialization.
