동천(洞天)에 대한 기억의 소환 - 가오싱젠 『영산』의 유토피아적 의미 -

Abstract

가오싱젠(高行健)의 『영산(靈山)』은 유토피아적 성격을 지닌 작품이다. 작품은 인간의 심연 속에 존재하는 유토피아적 의식세계를 탐색하는, ‘영혼의 산’으로 표상화된 상징적 유토피아에 대한 서사이다. 그리고 이 ‘영혼의 산’의 이미지는 도교의 ‘동천’과도 매우 유사하다. 이 작품은 작가의 분신과도 같은 ‘나’와 ‘당신’의 여행기 형식으로 기록된 기유문학(紀遊文學)인 동시에 자전적 성격을 띠고 있다. 중국의 서남부 산악지대에서 동남부 바닷가까지 횡단하는 여정을 통해, 중국이 근대성을 수용하는 과정에서 잊혀져가던 고대신화와 민간신앙, 오지의 소수민족 등, 원시적 생명력을 담지한 상징들과 만나게 된다. 그리고 ‘나’는 이러한 만남의 여정에서 ‘영산’에 이르는 영혼의 지도를 스스로 그려가게 되는 것이다. ‘영혼의 산’은 현실세계에는 존재하지 않지만 끊임없이 추구해야 하는 유토피아적 의미를 지니고 있다. 그리고 그 유토피아의 함의는 제도로 실현할 수 있는 서구적 이상향은 아니며 또한 ‘대동’이나 ‘도화원’과도 다른, 지극히 추상적으로 개념화된 ‘洞天’의 이미지를 나타내고 있다. 이는 ‘나’가 탐색하고 만나게 되는 신화와 전설 소수민족 속에서 중국인들의 의식의 심연에 자리하고 있는 ‘동천’의 기억을 소환해내는 이미지로 나타나고 있다. 본고에서는 가오싱젠의 『영산(靈山)』에 함의된 유토피아적 의미에 대하여 고찰하고자 한다.

“Soul Mountain” is a work of utopian character. However, it is different from utopia, which means a society with institutional integrity that has been raised since Thomas Moor. The work is a narrative of a symbolic utopia represented as “the mountain of the soul” exploring the utopian conscious world that exists in the human abyss. The image of this “mountain of the soul” is very similar to the “Dongtian” of Taoism. In the process of crossing from the mountainous region of southwest China to the seashore of the southeastern part, the work meets with myths, folk beliefs, women, and ethnic minorities that modern civilization has brought to the periphery or is forgotten in it. In addition, “I” draws the map of the soul that leads to “Soul Mountain” in this journey of encounter. The “Mountain of the Soul” does not exist in the real world, but it has a utopian meaning that must be constantly pursued. The implication of the utopia is not the Western ideal that can be realized by the system, but also the image of “Dongtian” which is conceptualized in a very abstract way, which is different from “Datong” or “Taohuayuan.” It is an image that summons memories of “Dongtian,” which is located in the abyss of Chinese consciousness in the myths and legendary ethnic minorities that “I” searches and meets. In this paper, we examine the utopian meaning implied in Gaoxingjian's “Soul Mountain.”
