Abstract

This paper analyzes the semantical meanings of the French indefinite article and the definite article and how they are actually incorporated in translated literary works. First, the paper will define the indefinite article and the definite article using various examples and through the process develop an understanding as to how they may be translated into Korean in relation to theories on translation. Chapter one, the paper will define the usage of the indefinite article and the definite article in various examples in relation to the definition noted in the Le bon usage. Chapter two, analyze and summarize examples of noun phrases which is made up of an indefinite article or an definite article and a noun. Chapter three, in reference to the examples shown in chapter two, the chapter will analyze the translations of the indefinite articles and the definite articles in Saint-Exupery`s Le Petit Prince in the Korean translation. Through this approach the paper will try to discern and address the problems that may be encountered in translations. The problems in translating the French indefinite articles and the definite articles into Korean are that there are no corresponding grammatical theories which govern both languages. As can be denoted from the examples that were suggested in the preceeding chapters, any translation of French into Korean can and may differ from one translation to another due to the fact that there are no grammatical category regarding the definite articles and the definite articles in Korean grammar which corresponds to that of French grammar. The variations in translation are a subtle and a delicate matter and should be taken into account based on text type and various translation shifts that can be noted.
