탈냉전과 38선 획정의 재조명

Abstract

이 논문은 방대한 미국 외교문서들을 바탕으로 38선 획정을 연구한 국내 최초의 기념비적 연구 성과인 이용희(李用熙)의 「38線劃定 新稿」를 탈냉전 시점에 재조명하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이글은 냉전 종식 이후에 공개된 소련을 비롯한 공산권 문서들에 기초하여 그의 논문이 갖고 있는 학문적 의의를 살펴보려는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이 글은 그의 논문이 갖고 있는 문제 의식과 핵심적 주장들을 최근 공개된 새로운 문서들과 연구 성과들에 기초하여 재조명해 보고자 한다. 이 과정에서 그의 논문이 미국이라는 강대국 정치의 입장을 대변한 군사편의주의설에 함몰되지 않으면서 동시에 그 이후 등장한 수정주의적 편향성을 극복할 수 있는 독창적 입장을 제시하고 있다는 점을 보여줄 것이다. 다음으로 이 논문에서 제시된 그의 주장이 냉전 종식 이후 새롭게 공개된 자료들에 비추어볼 때 어느 정도 타당성이 있는지 평가할 것이다. 결론적으로 필자는 그의 논문이 그의 전체 학문세계에서 차지하는 의의를 평가하고 향후 과제들을 제시하고자 한다.
